Giants 45+ (W) 12, at Firebirds (W) 0
The Giants 45+ captured the Bay Area Mens Senior Baseball League's inaugural 45 and over World Series title by sweeping the Firebirds with a 12-0 victory on Sunday 9/30/07. After a sluggish start to the season the Giants reeled off six consecutive victories to close out the year.
Paul Juarez led the way in the title clinching game with four hits and 2 RBIs while Pat Carroll and Don Bradshaw each had two hits. Carroll had 4 RBIs and Bradshaw knocked in 3. Carroll went the distance for the Giants picking up his fifth win of the season. The defensive play of the game was made by Hiroaki Ajari as he raced from centerfield towards rightfield and dove and caught a ball to take away a possible run scoring hit in the gap.
It took the Giants about 2/3 of the way into the season to finally hit their stride and to find their identity. The defense improved remarkably since the beginning of the season. Most impotantly, team chemistry and camaraderie was forged into a solid foundation of strength.
Bradshaw led all Giants hitters with a .486 batting average and 16 RBIs for the year. Juarez was not far behind as he tore through the campaign at a .473 clip. Other leading batters included Charlie Goldberg at .417, Mark Sieben at .378 and Craig McKee-Parks at .327. Ray Allen batted .300 and tied with Juarez for the team lead in runs scored with 15. Bob Jordan also reached .300, but was even more effective with his great hustle and smart base running. Falling just short of the .300 mark were Carroll at .288 and Drew Maran at .277. Rob Goldstein led all Giants players with 11 stolen bases.
The Giants defense was bolstered by first baseman Mike Mazzi, centerfielder Ajari and part time third baseman Bill Miller. Also contributing nicely to the defense were right fielders Paul Wiederecht and Brian Willis.
The Giants showed a lot of perseverance on the march to this championship run. Indeed, the season was fraught with perils at every turn. However, the team managed to come through relatively unscathed, and in the end, finished Champions!
