Red Sox 6, Brewers North 6
Apparently the Brewers and Red Sox have been watching too much World Cup soccer as they decided to play to a 6-6 draw in 10 innings at the College of Marin on Sunday.
The battle between the top two teams in the league was well played by both squads. The Brewers got out of the gate quickly scoring 2 in in 1st via a double from Dell Desamparo. Then the Brewers tacked on another in the 5th on an RBI single by Kosach.
The Red Sox battled back in the bottom half of the 5th scoring 3 runs. Long time Brewer killer, Rick Russelle had a 2-run bomb and Nick Fleury scored from 3rd (thanks to a mental error by the Brewers' catcher ... oh, that's me).
The Brewers came right back in the top of the 6th scoring 2 runs, on a sac-fly by Wilcox and a passed ball. But the Red Sox tied the score again, scoring two of their own in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double by Sittauer and an RBI single by Chris Bachacalupe.
The Brewers scored their final run in the top of the 8th on a sac-fly by Thiago "Pick Up Your Money" Lopez. But the Red Sox wouldn't go down without a fight, and tied it up in the bottom of the 9th on a RBI single by one of those O'Neil brother ... I always get them confused ... I'm going to say it was Jamie.
Offensively the Brewers were led by Joe Jacobitz who had 2 hits and 2 runs scored, Kosach was 3-4 with 1 RBI, and Dell had 2 hits, 1 run scored and 2 RBIs.
The Red Sox hitters were led by Alan Macleod was 3-4 with a double and 2 runs scored. Oh yeah, and Rick's bomb (retire already).
Defensively both teams played well as expected. The Red Sox's infield played suberb all day turning 3 double plays to shut down Brewer rallies. For the Brewers, Wilcox (in his first game back after knee surgery), had 2 sick stabs at 3rd base to deny extra base hits, and "Bird" Barringer prevented a heart-breaking ninth inning loss by catching a fly ball in right center and throwing a strike to the plate to double up the runner trying to tag up from 3rd to end the inning.
But the real story of the game were the pitchers on both sides. Tyler Fitch pitched 5-2/3 innings for the Brewers with 7 K's. And in keeping with the soccer theme, the Brewers' man of the match was Mike Rocca. Rocca was 2-4 at the plate with a double and a run scored. But he saved his best for the mound pitching 4-1/3 innings, giving up no earned runs and striking out 3. I think even Allison was impressed this week.
And in an old school pitching performance Ryan McClelland went all 10 innings for the Red Sox. He worked out of several jams in the first few innings, and then got stronger as the game progressed. I hope someone bought him a beer afterwards.
