Brewers North 11, Red Sox 9 October 10, 2010, 12:00 PM Game Recap
Brewers North 11, Red Sox 9
It took two weekends, but the Brewers beat the Red Sox 11-9 to take the first two games of the best of three series ... and win their first ever championship!
After some ... cough, cough ... contentious e-mails with the league office about the venue for the championship game (the league proposed West Sunset!), Ryan O'Neil from the Red Sox came through with College of Marin ... but not until 4:30. Both teams agreed beforehand that if we ran out of daylight that we would complete the game the following weekend before game 3.
The Red Sox score 2 in the top of the 3rd but the Brewers battled right back in the bottom of the inning to tie the score. Then things got crazy in the bottom of the 4th as the Brewers scored seven runs on 3 hits, 2 BB's, 2 HBP's and 2 errors. The Brewers tacked on one more in the bottom of the 5th and the Red Sox added one in the top of the 6th. Going into the 8th the Brewers held a commanding 10-3 lead ... and though it was getting dark the Brewers were hoping that if we could finish the inning strong the Red Sox might opt to not come back out again. Well that didn't work out to well ... as the Red Sox scored 6 in the top half of the 8th to make it 10-9. And by that time it was too dark to finish.
So the next weekend the Brewers and Red Sox met for what the Brewers hoped was going to be a quick finish to the game ... because if not Game 3 was looming. But the Brewers added one in the bottom of the 8th on Stevie "No Longer Gametime but Insurance" Kosach's gapper double and Rocca held down the fort in the 9th for the win.
The Brewers were lead by Mike Rocca and his gutty pitching performance. With Tyler out with a torn labrum, Woody handed the ball to Rocca and told him ... you're going to finish. Truth be told the week off might have saved the season as Rocca was tiring fast in the 8th, but he battled for 9 tough innings against the best team in the league and got the biggest win of the season.
Offensively the Brewers were lead by Jimmy who was 2-4, with a double with 2 RBIs, Bird was 2-4 with 1 RBI, Joe was 1-4, Dell was 1-4 with a double and 2 runs scored, Petke was 1-3 with a double, 2 runs and an RBI, Kosach was 2-3 with a double, RBI and run scored, Woody was 2-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored, Malc had an RBI and run scored, Wilcox had and RBI and run scored, Rocca was 1-3 with 2 runs scored, Thiago had an RBI and Willie had an RBI and run scored.
So top to bottom the everyone produced, just like we have all year long. Everybody on the roster had either at least an RBI or run scored (if not both) ... except for Joe who apparently was tired of carrying us all by himself and decided to let the rest of us have a turn.
It took 13 years (13 freakin' years!) but the Brewers took home the championship. Needless to say the end of season party at the Kezar might be worth attending if you are around on 10-23. Joel Russell is making an appearance and hopefully some of our old teammates will make it back to celebrate and have a trollbanger or two.
